Established by founder Bruce Morton Wright in 1978, the orchestra was first known as the Erie Bayfront Orchestra. His desire was to insure that high-quality chamber orchestra music was available to everyone in the Erie community no matter their age, income, education or cultural background. Founded In 1982, it came into residency at Gannon University to provide a cultural exchange for the Gannon University students, staff and faculty, in addition to the Erie Community and other local educational institutions and performing organizations. Known as the Erie Chamber Orchestra, they focused on presenting a diverse range of repertoire, it not being uncommon for audiences to hear exciting and innovative works by complete unknowns alongside treasured favorites. Guest artists were often drawn from within the orchestra or from the region to highlight the artistry and talent of local musicians.
In April of 2018, Gannon University ended it’s support and association with this important cultural icon. The dedicated members of the ensemble refused to let the vision and dream of the orchestra’s founder, Bruce Morton Wright, slip away. With a new board, and new vision, the PRESQUE ISLE PROMUSICA was created to continue bringing classical, Chamber Orchestra music to the masses. LUTHER MEMORIAL CHURCH has stepped to the front of the supporters, offering the orchestra a permanent home!
